EN- Helmut Newton, pseudonym of Helmut Neustädter (Berlin, October 31, 1920 – West Hollywood, January 23, 2004), a German fashion photographer, naturalized Australian, known in particular for his studies on the female nude.

The famous photograph “Les Nus et le Vetus” taken for Vogue in 1981, is emblematic of how his eye irreverent by “professional voyeur” rewrote the old aesthetic codes embalmed, revolutionizing fashion photography in the 70s.

No longer a dream to sell, imprinted on the glossy pages of the most important trade magazines, but fantasies rework, on which baste dreams in freedom. His is a world totally freed from the conventions moralizing, by conformism and hypocrisy and, at the same time, is full of ambiguity and complexity existential; dominated by the fascination for the beauty, attracted by the power of feminine seduction, inexhaustible sources for his creative process and his erotic imagination, as a filter processing to coin a fantastic photographic language, which draws on the real. Helmut Newton

It ‘a universe populated with references ranging from the history of painting to cinema, the literary suggestions, so as to recreate some famous shots the sense of a story that goes far beyond the instant photo. Before his white/blacks thwarted, carved by the skilful play of lights, you have the feeling of being in the presence of a scene Visconti, where every detail is designed to perfection and nothing is superfluous.

And it ‘its culture of man of the twentieth century, upper-class German Jewish child, grew up between solicitations literary, artistic avant-garde and reminiscences nineteenth century, to emerge between the lines of his elegant compositions. Roots and identity that finally broke in the winter of ’38 to escape the Nazi raid, leaving behind the remembrance of Berlin, site of the soul and of lost dreams, the sweetness of his mother and the pastel colors of his clothes satin.

Then the flight to Australia, meeting with June (future Alice Spring), the passion for photography noire and Metro of Weegee, the return to Europe and the consecration in Paris. The harsh light, the composition prepared, the strong contrasts in perfect balance with each other, the focus of the particular strong and evocative and symbolic characterize his style, which over the years will be ever more more refined, keeping his writing unmistakable and inimitable. The feelings are excluded from the field of view. Helmut Newton
