EN – Diane Arbus (New York, March 14, 1923 – Greenwich Village, July 26, 1971), American photographer of Russian origin, the second of three children born into a wealthy Jewish family owns a chain of department stores, only 14 years knows that Allan Arbus when the bride turns 18 in danger of giving up college.

Began photographing quirky characters, reminiscent of the aesthetics of the film, of ’32, “Freaks” by Tod Browning, knows them by attending the Club’82 and l ‘Hubert’s Museum, the sideshow Wonderland, where she meets characters like “Miss Storme de Larverie the woman who dresses the man “and” Moondog “a blind giant with a big beard and horns Viking or” Cha Cha Cha “the Mexican man suffering from dwarfism.
Some of these characters are portrayed several times over the years, the Arbus, does not just photograph them in passing but fails after some initial distrust to establish with them relations of intimacy and friendship.
At the beginning of the ’60s came the first publications, the first in 60 of Esquire, a series of six photos entitled “The Vertical Journey” (the title of which refers to’ literary work “Alice in Wonderland”), in ’61 “The full circle” in Harper’s Bazaar, from ’62 became interested in the topic of nudists and publishes photos of the actress Mae West, who like others who portrays Diane on commission, does not like the way it is photographed.

Diane Arbus è stata una fotografa famosa soprattutto per i ritratti in bianco e nero di persone emarginati : nani, transessuali, nudisti, malati mentali e artisti del circo, che incontrava e fotografava per le strade di New York, nei parchi pubblici e nei locali.
Fino al 27 novembre il Met Breuer lo spazio del museo Metropolitan di New York dedicato all’arte moderna e contemporanea,
esporrà più di cento fotografie, gran parte delle quali inedite, che scattò nei primi anni di carriera, tra il 1956 e il 1962.
Diane Nemerov Arbus è il cognome del marito nacque nel 1923 in una famiglia di ebrei russi emigrati a New York, proprietari di un grande magazzino sulla Quinta Strada.
A 18 anni sposò l’attore Allan Arbus, con cui ebbe due figli.
Il marito aveva lavorato come fotografo dell’esercito, durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, e fece iniziare la moglie a fotografare regalandole una macchina fotografica nel 1941.
I due aprirono insieme uno studio e si dedicarono soprattutto alla fotografia commerciale e di moda,
lavorando per riviste importanti come Vogue e Glamour.
Nel 1956 Arbus abbandonò lo studio e si dedicò a progetti più personali: è in questo periodo che cominciò a ritrarre le persone stravaganti ed emarginate che incontrava in strada.
Arbus si separò dal marito nel 1958 e divorziarono nel 1969.
Morì a 48 anni: soffriva di depressione e si suicidò il 26 luglio 1971.
