EN – Gianni Berengo Gardin (Santa Margherita Ligure, October 10, 1930) is an Italian photographer of the best known. It started in 1954 to deal with photography. He began his career as a photojournalist in 1965, when working for The World of Mario Pannunzio.
In the coming years he collaborates with major national and international publications as Domus, Epoca, Le Figaro, L’Espresso, Time, Stern.
His characteristic way of photographing, his keen eye to the world and to the different realities, from architecture to landscape, daily life, have the international success and make it a photographer in great demand in the market of image communication. Many of the most incisive advertising photographs used in the last fifty years come from his archive.
Procter & Gamble and Olivetti repeatedly used his photos to promote their image. His friendship with the architect Carlo Scarpa allowed him to document some of the works of the latter, as the tomb Brion near Treviso. Berengo Gardin has exhibited his photos in hundreds of exhibitions have celebrated his work and his creativity in different parts of the world: Museum of Modern Art in New York, the George Eastman House in Rochester, the National Library in Paris, Dating international Arles, ilMois de la Photo in Paris, the FNAC galleries.

In 1991 one of his major retrospective was hosted by the Elysée Museum in Lausanne in 1994 and his photos have been included in the Italian exhibition dedicated to the art at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Arles, during the International Meetings of Photography, received the Oskar Barnack – Camera Group Award.
Gianni Berengo Gardin has published 210 photo books. Among others, Venise des Saisons, Dying class (with Carla Cerati), The eye as a profession, Tuscany, France, Britain, Rome, Inside the houses, inside work, Scanno, The World, One country two decades after (with Cesare Zavattini), train through Italy (with Ferdinando Scianna and Roberto Koch), until the big book anthology entitled Gianni Berengo Gardin Photographer (1990), The publisher contrast in 2005 published the great book anthology ” Gianni Berengo Gardin “, in Italian, English, French and American.

IT – Gianni Berengo Gardin (Santa Margherita Ligure, 10 ottobre 1930) è un fotografo italiano tra i più noti. Ha iniziato dal 1954 ad occuparsi di fotografia. Inizia la sua carriera di fotoreporter nel 1965, quando lavora per Il Mondo di Mario Pannunzio. Negli anni a venire collabora con le maggiori testate nazionali e internazionali come Domus, Epoca, Le Figaro, L’Espresso, Time, Stern.
Il suo modo caratteristico di fotografare, il suo occhio attento al mondo e alle diverse realtà, dall’architettura al paesaggio, alla vita quotidiana, gli hanno decretato il successo internazionale e lo rendono un fotografo molto richiesto anche nel mercato della comunicazione d’immagine.
Molte delle più incisive fotografie pubblicitarie utilizzate negli ultimi cinquant’anni provengono dal suo archivio. Procter & Gamble e Olivetti più volte hanno usato le sue foto per promuovere la loro immagine.
La sua amicizia con l’architetto Carlo Scarpa gli ha permesso di documentare alcune opere di quest’ultimo, come la tomba Brion vicino Treviso. Berengo Gardin ha esposto le sue foto in centinaia di mostre che hanno celebrato il suo lavoro e la sua creatività in diverse parti del mondo: ilMuseum of Modern Art di New York, la George Eastman House di Rochester, la Biblioteca Nazionale di Parigi, gli Incontri Internazionali di Arles, ilMois de la Photo di Parigi, le gallerie FNAC.
L’8 settembre 1981 si trova a Ulassai per documentare l’operazione Legarsi alla montagna di Maria Lai, un’operazione che segnerà negli anni a seguire un importante spartiacque dell’arte contemporanea, alcune fotografie sue di quell’evento sono parte integrante della collezione del MuseoStazione dell’arte di Ulassai.
Nel 1991 una sua importante retrospettiva è stata ospitata dal Museo dell’Elysée a Losanna e nel 1994 le sue foto sono state incluse nella mostra dedicata all’Arte Italiana al Guggenheim Museum di New York. Qualche anno fa ha dedicato il suo lavoro alle comunità di zingari in Italia e il libro Disperata Allegria – vivere da Zingari a Firenze ha vinto nel 1994 l’Oscar Barnack Award. Nel 2005 la Federazione Italiana Associazioni Fotografichegli ha dedicato una monografia della collana “Grandi Autori”. Nel febbraio 2005 la Fondazione Forma per la Fotografia ha presentato una sua grande mostra retrospettiva alla Maison Européenne de la photographie di Parigi e successivamente nel luglio 2005 ha iniziato la sua attività espositiva con una grande mostra di Gianni Berengo Gardin a Milano. Nel novembre 2007, sempre la FIAF, ha edito la monografia “L’Abruzzo dei fotografi”, che ospita (anche in copertina) dieci sue immagini dell’Aquila ed un’intervista. Nel dicembre 2007, in occasione del Lucca Digital Photo Festival, ha esposto a Lucca il suo ultimo lavoro “Aiutiamo la Casa del Sole”. Di notevole spessore i suoi scatti nello studio bolognese di Via Fondazza del pittore ed incisore Giorgio Morandi, ripubblicati in una raccolta uscita nel gennaio 2009 a cura della casa editrice Charta. A maggio 2009 all’Università Statale di Milano gli è stata conferita la Laurea honoris causa in Storia e Critica dell’Arte. Sempre nel 2009 pubblica con Allemandi & C. “Reportrait.
Incursioni di un reporter nel mondo della cultura” (con Flavio Arensi), in cui presenta oltre duecento ritratti inediti di artisti, intellettuali, scrittori, architetti. Per la prima volta, dunque, non la gente comune ma i personaggi, da Warhol a Zavattini, da Pasolini a Piano incontrati nella sua lunga carriera di reporter.
Nel maggio 2009 la Mostra omonima è ospitata ad Orta S.Giulio (No), sul Lago d’Orta. Sempre Allemandi pubblica un libro dedicato dal fotografo al lavoro di Mimmo Paladino. Lunedì 17 agosto 2009 a Porretta Terme è stata inaugurata la mostra fotografica “La Porrettana in cinque amici”.
Le immagini ritraggono la prima “strada ferrata” che attraversò l’Appennino collegando Bologna con Pistoia com’è oggi, soffermandosi lungamente sui luoghi che la ferrovia Porrettana attraversa e sulle persone che lì vivono. Ha lavorato in Italia e all’estero trascorrendo lunghi periodi a Roma, Parigi e inSvizzera. Nel 2013 Berengo Gardin ha iniziato una collaborazione con It@rt, prestando le sue fotografie alla creazione di t-shirt in edizione limitata e certificate dall’artista stesso.
