IT – L’avvento della fotografia a colori avvenne quando Kodak introdusse la pellicola Kodachrome, una pellicola rivoluzionarie messa in commercio nel 1935, ma ora, nel 2012, Leica ha deciso che “in bianco e nero non sarà altro che un nuovo colore”. Nel complesso, considerando tutte le caratteristiche di questa fotocamera si puo dedurre che l’essenziale è solo l’immagine e la sua qualità, e nient’altro. Nel tentativo di produrre un dispositivo essenziale ma allo stesso tempo semplice semplice, tanto da creare una macchina semplice ed efficace, in grado di fare del bianco e nero una gradevole alternativa di qualità al tradizionale colore.
EN – The world was introduced to color photography when Kodak introduced the revolutionary Kodachrome film in 1935. But fast forward to 2012, Leica decided that “monochrome is the new color”. The feature-set of this camera might be summed up in the sentence ‘it takes pictures’, as in truth it does little else. In an attempt to produce a pared down and simple device, Leica has steered clear of including anything other than the basics of what you might need, able to make black and white a pleasant quality alternative to the traditional color.

EN – A camera isn’t necessarily worse off for a lack of features, since offering centre-weighted metering (as the Monochrom does) but no autofocus and no picture styles, doesn’t make the camera less useable. Where we might begin to struggle with such abstinence though is when real photography functions are affected – such as with a restricted ISO range of 320-10,000. Although such a range is obviously a good thing for those who like to shoot in low light, those who enjoy an f/2 lens for its f/2 maximum aperture – and who prefer to shoot during the hours of daylight – might find their options rather limited. Leica does provide a ‘pull process’ ISO 160 setting, but we know without looking that this will have a reduced dynamic range, and inevitably, blown highlights. The most obvious feature of the camera is of course the remarkable sensor. It’s an 18Mp device that measures 23.9×35.8mm – full frame. As it’s required to output luminance values, it has no use for the RGB coloured Bayer filters that usually feed colour information to pixels. That means it can collect more light than most – hence the minimum ISO 320 setting. Neither is there any use for a low-pass filter, meaning the resolution of the light passing from the lens isn’t reduced and there’s no need for the usual interpolation. Consequently, this sensor arrangement should possess a first-class ability to render detail clearly without the need for post-capture Unsharp Masking. As the sensor is full-frame, lenses retain the effects of their marked focal lengths. The Leica M lens series offers focal lengths of between 16mm and 135mm, but this camera is designed to provide screen guides for 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, 90mm and 135mm lenses. With Leica’s usual digital camera viewfinder magnification of 0.68x, the 47.1mm mechanical base length of the rangefinder focusing system is effectively 69.25mm – which is slightly shorter than the company’s film models. Focusing should still be very accurate. The feature most missing on the Leica Monochrom though is a good rear screen. The 2.5in 230k-dot model provided lacks the resolution and the size to be as useful as one might hope a screen would be on a camera of this type (and price!).
IT – Una macchina fotografica non è necessariamente peggiore delle altre se mancanza di funzionalità e opzioni, dal momento che offre la misurazione ponderata centrale (come fa la Monochrom), ma senza autofocus e senza stili di immagine, non rende la fotocamera meno utilizzabile. Potremmo cominciare cosi’ una stretta astinenza con molte funzioni interessati tipiche di altre ammiraglie della fotografia, come ad esempio con una gamma ISO ristretta di 320-10,000. Anche se una tale gamma è ovviamente buona cosa per chi ama scattare in condizioni di scarsa luce, coloro che godono di un obiettivi luminosi topo un f / 2 per la sua apertura massima f / 2 – e che preferiscono scattare di giorno – potrebbe trovare queste caratterische piuttosto limitanti. La caratteristica più evidente della fotocamera è naturalmente il sensore. Si tratta di un dispositivo da18MP che misura 23.9×35.8mm (full frame). Come è necessario per i valori di luminanza in uscita, non hanno alcuna utilità i filtri RGB color di Bayer, filtri che di solito alimentano tutte le informazioni sui colori per pixel. Ciò significa che la Monochrome è in grado di raccogliere più luce rispetto alla maggior parte delle concorrenti – da qui la minima impostazione ISO 320. Né vi è tra le altre caratteristiche la presenza di un filtro passa-basso, cioè la risoluzione della luce che passa dalla lente non viene ridotta e non c’è bisogno di alcuna interpolazione. Di conseguenza, questa tipologia di sensore deve possedere una capacità di prima classe per il rendering ed il dettaglio, chiaramente senza la necessità di un post filtro a maschera di contrasto. Poiché il sensore è full-frame, le lenti mantengono gli effetti delle loro lunghezze focali segnate. La serie di obiettivi Leica M offre lunghezze focali comprese tra 16 mm e 135 millimetri, ma questa fotocamera è progettata per fornire guide dello schermo per 28 millimetri, 35mm, 50mm, 75 millimetri, 90 millimetri e 135 millimetri lenti. Con la solita fotocamera digitale il mirino di ingrandimento di Leica a 0,68x, il 47,1 millimetri lunghezza con base meccanica del sistema di messa a fuoco a telemetro è effettivamente 69,25 millimetri – leggermente più corto rispetto ai modelli cinematografici della società. La messa a fuoco dovrebbe essere ancora molto accurata. La caratteristica più riduttiva su Leica Monochrom è forse lo schermo anche se di buona qualità. Il modello di 2.5in 230k-dot fornito manca di risoluzione e dimensione al fine di essere utile come si potrebbe sperare, soprattutto su di una fotocamera di questo tipo (e prezzo!), non poco elevato e accessibile da pochi.
